On Music: The Paradoxical Art

The great philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer wrote “The effect of music is so very much more powerful and penetrating than is that of the other arts, for these others speak only of the shadow, but music of the essence.”* He believed it to be a pure expression of the will, the same will which Nietzsche believed to be inherently power-seeking.
